Medical Research
As an organisation the Hurley Group collaborate with medical research studies to support advancements in healthcare. This is important because:
- the use of information from GP medical records is very useful in developing new treatments and medicines;
- medical researchers use information from medical records to help answer important questions about illnesses and disease so that improvements can be made to the care and treatment patients receive.
Hurley Group share information with medical research studies only with your explicit consent or when permitted by law. You have the right to withdraw from any ongoing research at any time, as well as to opt out of future participation.
Further information regarding data relating to medical research can be found on the Privacy Notice.
Current Research Projects
The CMVibe Study
Hurley Group is taking part in the CMVibe study which aims to evaluate the safety and immune response of an investigational vaccine, which aims to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in children between 9 to 15 years of age. Hurley Group is working with our research technology partner uMed to invite patients to this study.
If you meet the study criteria, you may receive a text message, email or letter asking whether you would like to take part. Participation is entirely voluntary and you can opt out at any time. If you have any questions about this study, please contact the uMed nurse support team.
Smell Test Direct
Smell loss may be one of the most important signs of risk for developing brain disease. This exciting study, run by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, is exploring this link by providing study participants with a simple scratch-and-sniff test that they can do from home.
Anyone aged 60 years or older that has not been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease is eligible to participate in this study. Participants will upload the results of their smell test to an online portal for review. If results are abnormal, there will be a nurse follow-up call to discuss an invitation to a DaTscan to assess suitability for an additional longitudinal study run by The Michael J. Fox Foundation, called PPMI. If eligible for the PPMI study, participants will be asked to attend an annual in-person site visit for collection of biospecimens, imaging scans and cognitive and motor testing.
ACCESS Registries
Hurley Group is taking part in several studies known as ACCESS Registries, run by our research technology partner uMed. These registry studies follow participants over time and collect information provided by you, on your own terms, from the comfort of your own home. This provides researchers with invaluable data about different diseases and conditions. The data collection can be in the form of questionnaires, medical device data and DNA testing. These ACCESS Registries are currently enrolling patients who have been diagnosed with the following conditions:
- Parkinson’s Disease (AccessPD registry)
- Interstitial Lung Disease (AccessILD registry)
- Cardiometabolic Disease (AccessCMD registry)
If you’d like to find out more about these studies and what would be involved if you decided to participate, please contact uMed’s nurse support team at patientsupport@umed.io
